What can I expect from a treatment?

When you arrive you will fill out a health questionnaire.  You and your therapist will then discuss your concerns and expectations.  Your therapist will take you into the treatment room and show you to the table or mat.  She will then leave.

If you are receiving therapeutic massage you will remove most or all of your clothing, lie on the table, and cover yourself with the top sheet.  Your therapist will knock before re-entering the room.  You will be comfortably draped at all times during the treatment, and if you feel uncomfortable at any time let your therapist know and she will work with you to modify the treatment.

If you are receiving shiatsu or Thai massage you will remain clothed, so be sure to wear or bring loose, comfortable clothing. Jeans, slacks, and bulky clothing are not recommended as they interfere with the treatment.  Shiatsu includes an initial assessment that may include abdominal palpation, and pulse and tongue evaluation..

When your treatment is complete your therapist will leave the room.  You should rest for a few minutes before getting up.  If you received therapeutic massage you will get dressed and meet your therapist in the waiting room.

I am pregnant - can I still get a treatment?

Not only is it safe, but it is generally highly advisable to receive bodywork while pregnant.  It facilitates fluid circulation, it can reduce swelling in the extremities, it can reduce back, hip, and leg pain, and improve your overall comfort and energy levels.  It is recommended that you check with your doctor before scheduling an appointment to make sure that you do not have any specific contraindications for massage therapy.  We offer pregnancy and post-partum massage and shiatsu treatments.

Do you accept insurance?

At this time we do not accept insurance.  We do, however, offer a discount through certain carriers.  Please check with your insurance carrier to see if they participate in a wellness plan.  You can also check with your Flexible Spending Account to see if you can submit your massage therapy bills.  We do offer package deals if you are looking for a discounted rate.

How often should I get a massage?

This depends on your current condition.  We generally recommend weekly treatments for the first few weeks or until you begin to notice improvements.  For acute problems, most people find that their need for therapy is reduced after 4 to 6 visits.  For chronic problems it will likely take longer before you begin to feel improvement.  You and your therapist will determine the best treatment schedule for you.  For relaxation you can schedule appointments as necessary.

When is it not safe to get a massage?

You should not have massage on areas such as surgical incisions, rashes, burns, cuts, tumors, or delicate or broken skin.  You should avoid massage if you are susceptible to blood clots, have serious circulatory problems or severe varicosities.  If you are currently contagious with the flu, a cold, or other virus you should wait until you have recovered before scheduling an appointment.  If you have a serious illness it will be up to you, your therapist, and your doctor to determine if massage is appropriate for you.  Always check with your doctor if you are unsure!

Is it normal to feel sore after a massage?

Soreness is not uncommon, especially after a deep tissue massage.  This is why it is necessary to drink a lot of water after a massage to flush out any residual metabolic waste.  If you feel sore it should not last more than a day, and should not be more intense than a dull ache.

How do I know my massage therapist is certified?

Therapists are required to display their Maryland certificate in their offices.  A therapist with the designation CMT, or certified massage therapist, has completed a minimum of 500 hours of training and has passed a national certification exam.
